A recently released Congressional Research Service (CRS) report (pdf) describes U.S. Government plans to establish a new military command to be known as AFRICOM.AFRICOM will be responsible for U.S. military forces in Africa, promoting U.S. strategic objectives on the continent in light of "Africa’s growing strategic importance to U.S. interests. Among those interests are Africa’s role in the Global War on Terror and the potential threats posed by ungoverned spaces; the growing importance of Africa’s natural resources, particularly energy resources[.]"
